A BLOG ABOUT BECOMING A SENIOR TRIATHLETE
WELCOME,

Who Should Read this Blog?

If you are older and want to get into shape for your first triathlon but have a million and one questions, then you will feel right at home on this site.  The blog articles I have written are designed to answer the most common questions we newbies have about the triathlon sport. The intent of the posts is to allow us older non-athletes to attain a level of knowledge to complete our first race looking like winners and wearing a triumphant smiles as we cross the finish line.

Why Did I Write this Blog?

Do you think you are too old and out of shape to enter a triathlon?   Yes?  Well, so did I until I decided to just go and do it!  My wake-up call came several years ago when I was 61, I woke up one morning feeling old and sluggish and decided I would do the impossible.  I would compete in a triathlon.   Why was it impossible?  Well, I did not swim well, mostly breaststroke and very slow.  I am not a runner, it’s more of a shuffle and I did not have  a bike and to top it all I had around 8 weeks to train. Sometimes the notion of impossible can be a source of focus and that is exactly what happened here.  That eight-week period set off a chain reaction that was transformative.  My first goal was to see if I could attain a level of fitness that would allow me to get to the end of race.  Even coming in last place would have been considered a victory.  As I continued to train and learn more about the race my goals improved to loftier heights of being next to last.   Eventually the process became one of immense pride of participating in the race simply to achieve the bragging rights that I had completed a triathlon.   Never did it occur to me that I would compete in others after the first one.   When I crossed the finish line of my first race, the only thought on my mind was.  “ Wow I did that and I can’t wait to do this again”    I write this blog for all the older first time triathletes that simply want to participate and have fun and become healthier, fitter and collect some bragging rights.  If there is anything at all in my posts that is useful then I achieved my goal.
